Varieties of Risk

AHRC sponsored research project

Welcome to the Varieties of Risk project.

An AHRC sponsored joint research project hosted by the University of Stirling and Edinburgh. It was led by Philip Ebert (Stirling/Philosophy) and Martin Smith (Edinburgh/Philosophy). The project was active from September 2020 until June 2023.

The projects brought together academic researchers from philosophy, economics, statistics, and psychology and discussed the prospects and challenges of risk pluralism, risk perception, risk communication and ethical dimensions of risk judgements.

In totalm we ran seven workshops during our tenure and collaborated with a number of impact partners such as the Scottish Avalanche Information Services, Scottish Mountain Rescue, and Glenmore Lodge Training Centre. We brought together members from Police Scotland, MetOffice, Mountaineering Council Scotland and others to create a forum to exchange insights and challenges when communicating risks.
